Shelbyville is a wonderful community that is full of many resources and recreational attractions. Located on Lake Shelbyville, it gives residents access to a variety of recreational activities and historical landmarks.
Sites of historical interest include the Shelby County Courthouse, built in 1872. The building is classic in design. The Grecian statues represent the goddess of liberty and justice. Across from the courthouse, the soldier and sailors monument, designed by local artist Robert Root, is located in the Lincoln Public Square. A monument housing an eternal flame was dedicated to the veterans of Shelby County. After 37 years without an indoor movie theatre, Shelbyville again has a place for movie buffs. The original Roxy Theatre closed on November 6th 1966 and was restored and reopened in 2003 thanks to the generosity of car dealer Bob Boarman. Another site of interest is Williamsburg Hill, the highest point in central Illinois. It still has natural cold water springs and multiple varieties of fauna.
Lake Shelbyville boasts three marinas with boat rental and repair, slip rentals, guide services, and bait and tackle supplies. Campgrounds on Lake Shelbyville include Arrowhead, Cardinal, Coon Creek, Opossum Creek, Lone Point, and Lithia Springs. Other lake activities are hiking trails located south of Sullivan and Findlay.
The Lake Shelbyville area offers numerous fine golf courses a short drive from the lake. Some of the local motels offer package plans for the golf enthusiast.
The newest attraction is the Shelbyville Aquatic Center located in Forest Park. It provides zero-depth entry for the young, the old, and physically handicapped. It has a wet playground area, a sand playground area, concession/food court area, a shaded picnic area, and a new bath house. The Shelbyville Family Aquatic Center offers recreation for all ages. Group and individual season passes are available.
